Bonn City Air Quality and Transport Improvement Plans. March 2018 summary for activists.

    March 1, 2018 /

Bonn City has a problem. No, not the Beethoven Hall catastrophe. No, not the debt problem. No, not the swimming pool plan. I’m talking about the other one, the one that is seriously impacting health and quality of life. Air pollution levels have risen above permitted norms. Public transport quality appears to be dropping. Traffic levels are too high. The ongoing discussion involves diesel cars, electric transport, free public transport, cycle infrastructure, parking and even ski-resort style cable-car lifts. It’s a complex mix of projects and difficult to follow. Thanks to a recent statement from the City of Bonn, however, there’s a concise summary of actions available. This bullet-point list…

Rhein Cruise and Ship Tracking. Hi Mum!

    June 19, 2017 /

A Rhein cruise ferry, M.S. Emily Bronte of Riviera Travel, came through Bonn this morning and thanks to modern technology I timed a meeting and caught a glimpse of her. My Mum that is!   Tracking a wonderful cruise ship. M.S. Emily Bronte. There are about 1000 ships on the Rhein at any one time. As I look at a live tracking map there are 84 passenger ships between Koblenz and Düsseldorf, one of the most popular sections of the Rhein. Last night I met one of those ships as it docked in Koblenz. The M.S. Emily Bronte, launched this year, has 88 cabins and is impressively fitted. Cruise ferries…

Digital Hub Bonn. Coworking space opens 20th Feb. What next?

    February 12, 2017 /

Bonn Hub. Incubator. Startup center. Coworking space. Food lab? The last time I wrote about Bonn Hub, aka Digital Hub Bonn, it was July 2016 and just days after they had secured access to 3 million Euros of funding. The plan back then was bold and finally, 7 months later, Bonn Hub will have an opening party. Unfortunately the real-world Bonn Hub isn’t quite like the picture that was painted back then. To be fair, finding a location in Bonn must be incredibly difficult at the moment as Bonn enters into a multi-year program of re-development. All the space in front of the main station has been vacated for a…

Chippy in Bonn, at the Upper Crust. Pasty-licious!

    February 10, 2017 /

Bonn has a number of strong connections with Britain. Oxford is the twin town and there’s also Brit, John le Carré’s famous book ‘A Small Town in Germany.’ Bonn also has a few connections with 1944 and 1945 that my home country was responsible for (we’ll gloss over that) and me, Chippy. I was born in Basildon and brought up in Ipswich. I’m about as British as you get. Love a cuppa splosh I do so it was with great pleasure that I took the chance to visit Upper Crust, a British cafe on the Bonner Talweg. Oh My God! The Cornish Pasty. Phil Dickinson opened the Upper Crust last October…

    Mattheius and Godesburg restaurant projects.

    October 12, 2016 /

Over the summer months I was working (for my company, HiBlue) to create videos for a few clients in the restaurant and event sector around Bonn. Matthieu’s restaurant in the Sudstadt is a fine place with a great outdoor seating area for the summer and a very convivial dining room indoors for the cooler months. Restaurant Godesburg, on the other hand is a big, impressive location that can host weddings and corporate events. The location, stunning. Here’s some of the photography we did for Matthieu’s. Capturing the ‘gemutlichkeit’ (warm welcoming feeling) in the restaurant was important despite it being 30 degrees outdoors when we were there. Today it’s 10 degrees…

Bonn Hub – A startup center for international Bonn. Interview and information.

    July 14, 2016 /

I’ve been an independent web-worker for the last 12 years and involved with coworking in Bonn for the last 2 years. It’s a growing scene with a bunch of interesting people moving around in it. You’ll find small startups and independent workers connected to the Web and digital communities.  Coworking is stimulating and supportive but for new companies looking towards quick growth, funding and mentoring it’s not enough. An ‘incubator’ is one solution and Bonn will be getting its first one, soon. Bonn Hub has just reached 3 million Euro funding and is finalising its plans. I’ve been tracking the progress and it turns out that Bonn Hub is going to be more than just…

    April 4, 2016 /

As you pass through Bonn on the train and look west you’ll see a hill with a big radio mast on top. That’s the Venusberg. Around that mast lies the Venusberg district and it’s populated by around 2200 people. The Venusberg postal area is only 4 square kilometers in size, has a few shops and is a gateway to the Kottenforst forest that stretches south and west. Oh, and there’s a University Hospital where 7000 people work and over 1000 patients can stay overnight. I live there and I can tell you we have a traffic problem that needs to be fixed..niversity clinic Bonn or UKB – Wikipedia) generates a lot…

Bonn Hauptbahnhof – An ugly welcome, in pictures.

    August 11, 2015 /

I start this blog with what I think is the worst aspect of Bonn. It affects most, if not all the residents and tourists at some point and something needs to be done about it as soon as possible. The beautiful main train station building is really quite impressive in terms of architecture but as an en experience it is dark, smelly, ugly and an embarrassment.   Work will start on renovating the leaking roof soon and there are plans to redevelop the area in front of the station. The strassenbahn underpass is nearly repaired and at least there’s been some progress to the rear with a new hotel and food…

    Images of Bonn

    June 17, 2015 /

I’ve been living in Bonn for 13 years and it’s about bloody time I started writing about this wonderful city. Technically this Bonn-focused website is live, but it needs a lot more work before you will bookmark it.  My starting point was to curate the best of my photographs of Bonn and to add them to a gallery. I’ve now done that..and my first Bonn photo-tour is ready. 50+ photos are now available in the gallery, and you can see them here. Share, and share again because Bonn is a wonderful city and the world needs to know about it. Images of Bonn.

Welcome to Bonn, from my eyes.

I’ve lived in Bonn since 2002 and I’m excited to be able to give you my (English) story of Bonn. My history includes  tech blogging, videography and photography and I love my city and so I’m determined to use some my skills to document Bonn’s features, culture and events.
